SHIWA and relationship to Wf4Ever: GBIF enables free and open access to biodiversity data online. We're an international government-initiated and funded initiative focused on making biodiversity data available to all and anyone, for scientific research, conservation and sustainable development.

GBIF provides three core services and products:

  • An information infrastructure – an Internet-based index of a globally distributed network of interoperable databases that contain primary biodiversity data – information on museum specimens, field observations of plants and animals in nature, and results from experiments – so that data holders across the world can access and share them
  • Community-developed tools, standards and protocols – the tools data providers need to format and share their data
  • Capacity-building – the training, access to international experts and mentoring programs that national and regional institutions need to become part of a decentralised network of biodiversity information facilities. EZID (easy-eye-dee) makes it easy to create and manage unique, persistent identifiers.

  • You can create identifiers for any kind of entity — physical, digital, abstract, etc. For identifiers of objects on the web, you can use EZID to maintain their current locations so that people who click on the identifiers are correctly forwarded.
  • You can also store citation metadata with identifiers to aid in interpreting and maintaining them. Several citation formats are possible.
  • EZID supports a number of persistent identifier technologies, including ARKs (Archival Resource Keys) and DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers). ORCID, Inc. aims to solve the author/contributor name ambiguity problem in scholarly communications by creating a central registry of unique identifiers for individual researchers and an open and transparent linking mechanism between ORCID and other current author ID schemes. These identifiers, and the relationships among them, can be linked to the researcher's output to enhance the scientific discovery process and to improve the efficiency of research funding and collaboration within the research community. We are a not-for-profit organisation formed in London on 1 December 2009. Our aim is to:

  • establish easier access to scientific research data on the Internet
  • increase acceptance of research data as legitimate, citable contributions to the scientific record
  • support data archiving that will permit results to be verified and re-purposed for future study. DOIs and Linked Data: Some Concrete Proposals a free, social networking site that enables scientists, engineers, and other technical professionals to connect, collaborate with, and learn from each other. LabRoots fosters world-wide scientific communication and incorporates the newest social networking technologies. Peer Evaluation is about giving Open Access to your primary data, working papers, articles, media and having them all reviewed and discussed by your peers. Peer evaluation is a strong supporter of qualified peer reviewing and is, in that respect, a valuable supplement, inspiration and hub for peer reviewed journals and publications. Finally, Peer Evaluation is an independent and community interest project. Web application hybrids, popularly known as mashups, are created by integrating services on the Web using their APIs. Finding the appropriate API for a mashup requires significantly more effort than is supported by the current state of the art. Because so many offer nearly identical functionality, one way to distinguish between them is to look at the dissimilar attributes or facets of these services. Since these APIs are described in HTML documents, it is essential to look beyond the boundaries of current approaches to Web service discovery that rely on formal descriptions. In this work, we present a faceted approach to searching and ranking Web APIs. Our method adopts current research in document classification and faceted search and introduces the serviut score to rank APIs based on their utilization and popularity. We evaluate classification and search accuracy and ranking effectiveness using available APIs. "...Some time in January, the IEEE apparently quietly revised its copyright policy to explicitly forbid us authors from sharing the "final" versions of our papers on the web, now reserving that privilege to themselves (available to all comers, for the right price)..." colwiz - Collective Wizdom is a research management, collaboration and productivity platform for researchers, academics and students. We highlight the lack of any consensus practice, in astronomy, for minting and maintaining URIs intended to be used for long-term naming purposes. In the current draft, we i) highlight the current problem and suggest its importance, and ii) indicate possible solutions, without yet recommending any solution in particular. This is intended to be a discussion document, rather than a set of conclusions.,_digital_object_identifiers,_persistence,_correction_and_metadata Citation, Digital Object Identifiers, Persistence, Correction and Metadata
